Each month we chart a new course into the world of specialty coffee. For May 2025, we proudly present Abeam Costa Rica – San Rafael de San Ramón, a Single Origin gem from the heart of Alajuela, Costa Rica. Grown at an elevation of 1100 meters above sea level in nutrient-rich volcanic loam soil, this Medium Roast coffee is the result of passionate cultivation by growers Julia Vega Rodríguez, Olman Cruz Vega, Ricardo Chávez Garita, and Juan Bautista Mejia Rojas.
The journey of Abeam Costa Rica begins at Cafe de Altura de San Ramon, a state-of-the-art processing mill designed to ensure consistency and quality for small-scale farms. After harvesting, cherries are floated to remove damaged beans, then depulped and stripped of mucilage using advanced equipment—all done with recycled water to minimize environmental impact. A blend of traditional sun drying and mechanical dryers carefully brings the beans to a perfect 11% moisture content over a span of just three days. After a month-long rest in silos, the beans are meticulously milled, dehulled, and sorted by weight and color, ready for export and your next brew.
With varietals Catuai and Caturra, this cup bursts with a lively bouquet of apple, orange, peach, chamomile, and subtle hints of chocolate. It’s smooth, floral, and fruit-forward—a bright and uplifting profile that mirrors the Costa Rican landscapes from which it hails.
